Move over double-shot-extra-foam-coconut-milk-cappuccino. Theres a new treat in town. Let me introduce you to Starbucks’ newest and healthiest snack. Meet HoneyBar. They might be new to me and you, but these babies have been around for quite sometime. 25 years to be exact! So rest assured these guys know what the heck they’re doing when it comes to quality, taste, and overall yumminess.
Think Sesame Snaps… but better and better for you. They’re held together with one simple ingredient: Honey. The simplicity of these little bars is what drew me to them in the first place. Less is always more when we’re talking ingredients. My favourite, Sweet & Salty, is made with 6 super pure ingredients:
Packs a lot of punch
These guys pack a ton of nutrients into one little bar without breaking your caloric budget for the day. There’s a whopping 7 grams of protein, is high in iron, calcium and fibre in each little HoneyBar. Fibre and protein are essential nutrients that our bodies needs every single day. Our protein needs to constantly be replenished throughout the day to keep our energy levels up and fibre is your best defence against overeating since it slows the absorption of food.
I’m not super picky when it comes to the number of calories on a package BUT I do get excited when a food packs a lot of punch for little calories. HoneyBars are 200 calories or under which is really low for such a fulfilling food.
Not all snack bars are created equal
I’m soooooo careful when picking up a snack on the go and study the sh*t out of nutrition labels. I need to make sure they’ll satisfy and nourish me all while doing the same for my little guy. There’s a ton of ‘energy’ bars out there and it can sometimes be tempting to pick up the first chocolate dipped one you see. So here’s a guide to choosing the healthiest snack bar when you’re on the go…
Things to look for in a snack bar:
you can identify and pronounce every ingredient listed
has over 5 grams of protein
make sure it’s not being sweetened by anything gross like corn syrup, rice syrup, artificial sweeteners, or anything that ends in “-ose”
has over 2 grams of fibre
10 ingredients or less – remember that less is always more
You know how much of an advocate I am about planning your snacks and thinking ahead to your next meal. But as a busy Mom, I’m not always 100% prepared. Hell, yesterday, we went out and forgot to bring diapers in the diaper bag. My point is, we’re bound to be stuck now and again sans food. We’re lucky that we live in a time where snacks are accessible everywhere and healthy options are becoming more and more mainstream.
It wasn’t too long ago that Starbucks only carried cookies and muffins remember? HoneyBars are a super convenient (and tasty) alternative if you usually go for that giant chocolate chip cookie at Starbucks. Treat yo’self and nourish yourself with healthy snacks that taste amazing and provide awesome nutrition to that temple of a body.
Love, peace & HoneyBars
P.S. we call this the Nom Nom sequence. Look at that baby bird go!
