This just in – there’s a haute way to wrap one’s food now! Today, we’re talking about preserving & toting your food around in the newest, hippest way possible. Beeswax Wrap – the perfect alternative to plastic wrap I also have a surprise giveaway for you down below, so keep on readin’!
I first saw this bee-autiful boss lady on Dragon’s Den and thought, I need to meet her.
Her name is Toni and is the founder of Abeego, a company that makes beeswax-coated fabric food wrap. If you’re not familiar with beeswax wrap, allow me to give you a run down. You use it in place of plastic wrap, containers and bags to preserve your food. The material it’s made with allows your food to breathe, allowing exactly the right amount of oxygen through. Sound counterintuitive? Let’s put it this way… think of the skin of any fruit or vegetable. Lemons, for example, have a thick & porous skin that keeps it nice and fresh. Toni tells it like it is:
“If living food needed to be wrapped in airtight wrap the rind, peel or skin would be airtight. It’s not. Secondly, it’s inspirational. It looks good, feels good, smells good and fosters a healthier relationship with food”.
We’ve used natural products to protect and preserve our food since the beginning of time that would have been far healthier than plastic wrap, so why did we stop? Because plastic wrap is so convenient. That’s where Abeego comes in. It’s arguably even more convenient (and cheaper) than plastic wrap since it’s reusable and lasts up to a whole year. It’s also way more aesthetically pleasing 😉
I often bring salads over for family dinners and use a big beautiful wooden bowl. But when it comes to transporting it, the struggle is real! The plastic wrap doesn’t stick to the bowl and I end up using rubber bands and tape to hold it down. #ghetto. Abeego beeswax food wrap adheres to itself so it doesn’t matter what material your bowl is.
How to use Abeego Beeswax Food Wrap
We’ve used Abeego food wrap to:
cover up bowls & plates of food
wrap fruits & veggies
tote snacks around for Henry
twist ties for open bags
candles. Yes, candles!
I hate to admit it, but Mark & I were throwing out fresh food on a monthly basis. We’ll buy, for example, a huge bag of lettuce or a package of cucumbers, and then by the time we get to it, it’s already been greeted by mold or has become mushy. Why? Because we were just leaving it in it’s original packaging which eliminates air circulation or in the refrigerator drawer which allows too much moisture in, causing limp & mushy produce.
I decided to perform an experiment on none other than lemons, of course 😉 I cut the same fresh lemon in half and wrapped one half with plastic wrap and the other with Abeego beeswax food wrap. I waited 10 days (for an extra dramatic effect) and here’s what happened!
Crazy, right? The difference is abundantly clear and we’ve saved so much of the produce we would have otherwise thrown out.

Who knew a food wrap could be so gorgeous? To keep them looking, feeling and working in great condition, wash your Abeego wraps in COLD water with a bit of eco-friendly soap and then towel dry. To store them, simply roll or fold them up and tuck them into your linen drawer for the next time.
Taking a dish over to a dinner party wrapped in these will no doubt impress. They’re made with sustainable hemp, cotton, and beeswax and jojoba oil and feel & smell amazing.
Wait, Aren’t you Vegan?
I stopped eating animal products a few months ago to give my digestive system a break, and to my surprise abstaining from meats has really jived with my body. Much to my vegan peer group’s chagrin, I don’t do it for the animals. I still wear leather and I really love honey. So using a food wrap that is partly derived from beeswax doesn’t bother me. Plus, imagine the positive effect we’re having on bees when we took good care of the fresh food they supply us with!

Making the Switch
I’m not knocking plastic, as I still think it has it’s time & place. There are definitely some plastic products that don’t have suitable or realistic substitutes. However, when there’s a product like beeswax wrap in the market, the question is… why would you use plastic food wrap!?
After visiting the Abeego studio, we also learned that you can use beeswax wrap for more than just food 😉
Good luck with the giveaway!
Love, peace & keeping food fresh
