It’s baaaaaaaaaaack! Stampede is here ya’ll. Calgary is pretty much synonymous with Stampede, but for those of us who have lived here a while, well, we like to leave the Stampeding to the out-of-towners and first timers 😉 For those of us looking for something to do in Calgary other than knock boots with cowboys, I gotchu covered with the East Village Junction.
Welcome to The Junction
Small, local shops. Outdoors. Fun music. Entertainment. Colourful atmosphere. Fruit stands. Family friendly. Need I say more? These are all my most favourite things all wrapped into one place. Welcome to East Village Junction my friends! It has all the cuteness and charm of small town markets, the quality of upscale New York boutiques, and the convenience of the inner city. Also, it’s just cool… I mean, cute shops in colourful shipping containers? Yes please.
EV Junction is happening all summer long (until October 1) every Thursday through to Sunday. Each day, they have really fun workshops and events that’ll suit pretty much everyone. Check it:
I joined them last weekend for the Lululemon run and had the best time! I’m not sure why, but I thought that it would be a relatively small group of runners and was so surprised at the amazing turnout.
There were three super friendly running guides, each of which ran at a different pace. You’re also given the option as to what distance you’d like to run (5km, 10km, 15km, etc.) and they explain the route very well so you don’t get lost. Runners brought their dogs and strollers and we just had a blast! Even though I didn’t know anyone else, it really felt like a cozy community. Next time though, I’m totally bringing Henry in the running stroller.
The Shipping Container Shops
I know I’m not the only one who loves perusing local artisan shops. So if you’re anything like me, you have to check these guys out at EV Junction, a lot of which are family run. I know… the cuteness factor just went up 😉
A Mother-Daughter run jewelry run, delivering the prettiest little gem stone/bead bracelets and necklaces. A proceed of each purchase goes back to our community to help women-focused charities.
These guys have been around since 2011, so you might already be familiar with Alto. This brother duo creates wooden laser cut everyday essentials, like cell phone cases. Their designs are tasteful and timeless and you can also have them custom make your own design!
Here’s where farmer’s market meets inner city. The Apple Lady carries the freshest, juiciest, and tastiest fruit around. She gets all of her produce from the Okanagan and carries everybody’s favourites, like cherries, ambrosia apples, dried apple crisps, and more.
These guys provide high quality, healthy, and sustainable frozen food. They also carry freshly baked goodies from Kruse’s Bakery, including some insanely delicious macaroons.
We’ve had some hot summer days here in Calgary, and these guys offer the perfect solution – lemonade and frozen treats! They also carry some delicious sauces and spices.
This consignment boutique is rad, to say the least. They carry high end, designer brands and focus on contemporary and athleisure wear at affordable prices. Their clothes are all meticulously clean and in great shape – you’d never know you were buying second hand!
Graphic tees and hoodies for your guys from the coolest brands around. Their product is unassuming, aesthetically pleasing, and very high quality. Watch out for their new unisex brand, Jante, coming soon!
I don’t need to explain who these guys are, but what’s cool about this location is that it’s running-specific. They host free workshops and classes three times a week (have a look at the schedule ), all of which are run by their awesome local ambassadors.
I spent most of my time in this little shop. They have the coolest varieties of nut butters ranging from your plain jane (organic) PB to Vanilla Latte Almond Butter. Sign me up! Of course, Henry and I had to try just about every one of their products, including their delicious energy bites.
Their vintage bikes drew me in at first, and it was their friendliness that made me want to stay for the day. These guys will repair your old bike, sell you a new one, or you can rent one for the day!
Who doesn’t love stationary? Especially when it as cute as this! Wrinkle & Crease creates luxury paper goods for all your handwritten letters, cards, and notes. Their simplistic designs will make you want to forget about emails and texts for a while and start writing!
Location, location, location
The location of EV Junction might be one of my favourite parts about it. It’s just across the tracks from the Calgary Stampede grounds, so you’re able to avoid the horrendous traffic and it’s nestled in right in the heart of downtown close to the new National Music Centre. It’s also in walking distance from some really great coffee shops, so it’s perfect for a morning wander.
Patio fun in the sun
Looking for more fun in the sun? Of course you are 🙂 EV Junction hosts patio weekends once a month, on the third weekend of every month this summer (the next one is from July 20-23, 2017). Come out for some extra special programming and Village Brewery delights!
If you’re looking for the perfect outdoor place to shop or chill, EV Junction is your new summer hangout. With so many cool shops to check out, amazing free events to attend, and the raddest atmosphere in the city, you’ll want to visit over and over again. Keep up with them on social media by following Calgary’s East Village on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter.
There’s a whole lot to love at EV Junction and I know you’ll be a huge fan too! Share your experience on social media using the hashtags #eastvillageyyc #evliving #evevents and #evJunction and we’ll be sure to comment 🙂
