Bright red, green, and garish holiday decorations? Ya, me neither. Here’s a super simple minimalist Christmas decor DIY. You can use these as tree ornaments, mantle decor, or string as a fireplace garland.
What you’ll need
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup tapioca starch (I think corn starch would also work but I didn’t have it on hand)
1/2 cup water
The How
mix all ingredients together in a small pot
place on low heat and continuously stir. The mixture will become thinner at first but after about 5 minutes will begin to thicken
continue stirring on the stove until a ball of dough forms
place ball of dough in a bowl and cover it with a damp paper towel while it cools
Decorating
While the ball of dough cools, get out your tools for decorating and set your oven to 200° F. Here is what I used:
parchment paper
rolling pin
assortment of cookie cutters (I didn’t have a Christmas tree cookie cutter so I made a template out of cardboard)
a straw to poke holes with
Sharpies and markers. Paint would also look amazing but I didn’t have any black or gold paint at home and that’s the look I was going for
twine or string
Once your ball of dough has cooled, remove the paper towel and add in a bit of water if the dough feels a bit dry. Place it between two sheets of parchment paper and begin to roll it out. We rolled ours quite thin (1/4″) because we wanted to make a lot of ornaments.
Then use your cookie cutters to stamp out whatever shape you like. If you’re using a homemade template as I did, simply place it on the dough and trace it with a sharp knife.
Place all your shapes on a lined baking sheet and poke holes at the top of your shapes. This will allow you to string it so you can use it as a tree ornament. If that’s not your plan, just skip this step.
Finally, place your baking sheet inside your oven at 200° F for about 8-12 minutes depending on the thickness.
Once they’re out of the oven and cooled, you can begin painting or drawing. Then string through the hole you created and have fun decorating!
